As Daniel Freid strode out of his car and up to the stables, he was able to have a bit of alone time with his horses before they were to train.
First, he walked up to Rudy, his gray gelding.
"You're a good boy, Rudy." he said, stroking the gelding's head.
The irritable gelding pulled away with an indignant squeal, which only made Daniel chuckle. "It's okay, Rudy. I promise not to touch you more than I need to." he said with a lopsided grin.
After that, he hurried to Pink's stall.
The warm dusty chestnut filly was looking brightly and intelligently at him.
Daniel sighed, patting her neck. The filly snuffled his shoulder before butting it hard with her head fondly. Daniel looked up at her with a grin.
The filly and him had become friends lately, and she'd improved greatly from the skittish, irritable filly that had first come here.
Even though the filly wasn't the master at racing, Daniel didn't care.
"Just try your hardest girl, and that's fine by me." Daniel said with a bittersweet smile.
She bobbed her head with a snort. She was trying her hardest.
---
Later, on the track, Rude Awakening was galloping long and hard over a mile and a half, working up his stamina and endurance. The gelding was a bit rowdy and slow at the beginning, but then he focused and got into the groove.
After that, Clean Pink was rode onto the track, surprisingly very calm. The filly threw up her head in excitement as they quickly loaded into the practice gate. They repeatedly shot out of the gate and loaded back in, working on her timing with the bell and working on getting a headstart at the start of the race. The training was vital to a good horse.
